Hello again r/photography!
After some good advice the last time, I've been doing a lot of research and shopping around and decided a Nikon D5100 was the best fit to my wants for a first-time DSLR. I'm now trying to decide on lenses.
As a refresher, my big priorities are night shots (I'm an astronomer and like pictures of the galactic center over whatever telescope array I'm using at the time) and landscapes. Wildlife/nature is also big on my list.
I'm still on a budget, so I've come up with a few ideas for lenses, and was wondering where I should go first, as I don't think I can afford to get everything in the first go.
Option 1: Body Kit 18-55 mm ($600) and a refurbished Nikon 55-200 mm f/4-5.6 VR ($130)
Option 2: Body Kit 18-55 mm ($600) and a refurbished Nikon 55-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 VR ($230)
Option 3: Body Kit 18-55 mm ($600) and either a Nikon 50 mm f/1.8 prime ($130) or Nikon 35 mm f/1.8 prime ($200).
A few lingering questions I couldn't find answers that made sense to me via Google:
w.r.t. the night-sky shots. Is the 35 mm or 50 mm f/1.8 prime better for these than the kit 18-55 mm? Is it better enough that I should choose to get that to start off with rather than a decent telephoto?
For the telephoto, is the 300 mm that much better than the 200 mm? Will I regret not spending the extra $100? I've also considered a Tamron 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 Macro ($200) that lacks image stabilization, though I'm unsure if this doubles as a telephoto or not?
Have I missed some obvious candidates in this price range that would be a better second lens to the kit 18-55 mm?
Thanks for your help r/photography!
