Hey people of Reddit,
I recently did a hybrid installation combining fabric and digital projection. This was for my final production project for my third year at Ryerson University Photography program in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Heres a little description
In this hybrid installation, I used a two-dimensional projection and multiple sheets of fabric to create a three-dimensional illusion. The movie being projected is a ten minute loop of a female staring straight at the viewer. This creates a confrontation between the virtual image and viewer which helps suggest that the 2D image is a 3-dimensional person. The footage also flickers and has scratch marks to suggest old film/super 8 projection quality which is a constant reminder to the viewer that this is a 2D projection. The viewer is free to walk around the projection and interact with the fabrics. From the front or back, the subject in the film will always appear to be looking at the viewer. As the viewer walks around the installation, the thin fabrics will also move and shift from the viewers movements thus creating an interesting interaction between the projected image and viewer. I want the viewer to stare at this installation and be tricked between reality and illusion. As the viewer gets more curious, they are free to explore closely on how the installation is put together.
