A single drop for a glucose check is fine but if you need me to fill a capillary tube, I'm out. I just think it's hilarious looking back on all the hail Mary veins I've managed to draw from with itty bitty butterflies but I can't get a freaking finger tip to bleed with a blade. Anyone else in the same boat as me?
I'm really comfortable with capillary draws and particularly enjoy doing heel sticks for NBS as long as someone is there to keep the babe occupied with Sweet-ease. 🖤
I hadn't done many finger sticks until later in my career when I started at a new facility. We did loads of outpatient lead levels and CBCs via finger stick, so I got quick and proficient fast. Nothing worse than listening to a 1-2 year old screaming their head off, more upset about being restrained than anything.
