Reddit what do you think of this question: Can "evolution" be "perfect"?
Post Body

This is my first post ever to r/Philosophy, I mostly just lurk around for some mind-blowing ideas. And honestly I'm not even sure I'm posting this right. This is not my homework! I'm only in high school! I'm just curious because this question has been bugging me...

Anywho, I've had my mind stuck in a rut ever since I saw one of the Dalai Llama's statements the other day. While I'm atheist (for the most part) he holds to be a wealth of wisdom and insight. But in his statement, he said something along the lines (paraphrasing) that God is perfect because he evolves...

The concept of such an idea seems to be beyond my me. Here are my thoughts so far. To truly answer it I've brought out definitions of Perfect and Evolution.

  • Evolution implies that your previous form is defective in some sort and that your newer one is better, then doesn't that imply that you are essentially not "perfect" If you always have a flaw that can be overturned with your next evolution.

  • Can one thing be "more" perfect than the other?

  • Or is he referencing that the process of evolution itself is perfect? Allowing all of us, and now god to be perfect as well?

  • Is there a such thing as being perfect to the current need, rather than stagnating and becoming obsolete? Following the idea that evolution doesn't move towards a goal but rather to fulfill the situation's current needs.

  • Or is it that (here's the more unfounded answer) god is and has been always perfect? Just that he is just changing or "evolving" to keep up with our own evolutionary changes.

TL;DR: Thanks for attempting, or at least reading the end. You can just read the bullet points if you want.
