I know he's a great hitter, but...
Post Body

Trea Turner reminded me once again last night that he's not a plus fielder and he plays a critical position. I looked through what SS fielding stats they have at BBRef, and he's almost never in the top 10 in the good stats; last year, he was 5th in assists. Last year he also led the league in errors, with 23. This year, even with all the time he missed, he's tied for 8th. Elly De La Cruz is in the lead by a lot, and Gunnar Henderson also has more than Trea, but they're easy to forgive.

There was a time when fielding was a primary consideration for shortstops. Larry Bowa got first-place Rookie of the Year votes in 1970 with a .580 OPS, and he got a couple of gold gloves.

Is it possible Turner could be a relatively better fielder at some other position?
