The mayoral campaign is officially off to the races, and we can expect to see a very large field vying to succeed Kenney
Such a large field runs the very real danger of voting blocs splitting their power among multiple candidates. Progressive voters might split between Gym and Sanchez. Technocratic quality of life focused voters might split between Green and Rhynhart, and business/jobs focused voters could split between Domb and Brown. While the field will be winnowed as the campaign goes on, there's still a very high likelihood that 5 candidates remain on the ballot, and that somebody wins by a narrow plurality
Ranked choice voting worked well in New York City - 87% of voters ranked multiple candidates
Unfortunately per Philly 3.0 this has to be authorized at the state level - we can't just unilaterally decide to run our primaries this way, the state legislature has to pass a law letting us. Call your state representatives!
