Clinical pharmacists roles in the US versus the UK

Post Body

Hi guys

I’ve always been curious about how clinical pharmacy works in the US

For reference I’m based in the UK and I’m a prescribing clinical pharmacist working at an NHS general practice (I believe in the US this is called a family medicine clinic?)

In the UK as long as you have completed an non medical prescribing course then pharmacists are allowed to prescribe anything that is within their competency without a doctors input (with the exception for 3 medications used for drug dependency)

For example a few weeks ago I saw a patient face-to-face as he mentioned worsening shortness of breath on a background of asthma. I listened to his lungs which had crackles at the bases and on listening to his heart sounds I noticed a systolic murmur at the left ventricle. There was also mild pitting oedema at the ankles bilaterally. I sent labs for BNP which were above 2000 and referred for an urgent echo which showed heart failure with reduced LVEF

Do clinical pharmacists in the US also do consults like this? I’m asking as I’m getting quite bored of the UK and would be interested in working as a clinical pharmacist in the US but I’d like to know what the average clinical pharmacist does there
