Wilson D9 Driver Review
Post Body

Went to a Wilson demo day and had some thoughts:

D9 Driver:

  • Hot off the face, 20 yards longer than my Titleist 975D, due to their Peak Kinetic Response "PKR" tech that's pretty uniformly distributed throughout the club's face.
  • You can really go after the ball with your swing.
  • Set-up is super clean and looks intimidating

Darth Vader Driver

  • Mishits still carried a mile, but you could feel when you were off-base with your swing. This often produced a ball that would hold its line, but feel pretty dead to my hands. With my 975D when I hit it off the heel and toe it'll get a little bit more of an aggressive fade or draw.
  • Much more of a satisfying "clink" that came with a well-struck shot that took residence in the air and stayed for what seemed like forever.
  • One of the other guys demoing a club mentioned that he felt it had a high launch angle and was really pumping it into space. This was true for me, even with a more fluid swing just shy of 100 but with a lazy tempo. If you're like me and swing at 75% then that extra pop is nice, allowing the club to do the work to ignite the thrusters.
  • If you're looking for a lighter driver, like I like with my 975D, then you may want to go with the D7, which is uber light. Some like a little bit of weight so they can feel what the clubhead is doing and for this this D9 has a 10-gram sole weight towards the heel.

10G towards heel for all models but A-flex

  • If you're going for the A-flex you're looking at a 53-gram shaft and only a 67-gram shaft in stiff. Overall, this felt pretty solid, but still light and manageable.

Final Verdict: Did you like it? Yes.

Nicely weighted. Long enough to impress your buddies. Forgiving. If you haven't considered for Wilson for anything other than irons, this one is definitely a good one to go with. If you decide to buy one, I would suggest going with the D9 if you want a more solid yet nimble feel and D7 if you want something light as a feather to squeeze those last few MPH on your swing speed. Because of this club's high launch angle I would suggest going with the 9*. Really nice piercing ball flight that launched fast and rolled hot.
