Humans have historically used animals in every which way - started with food, then transport, farming, wars, sport, entertainment, law enforcement, therapy and finally pets!
Every single type of use of animals has been for humans' selfish comfort and existence. We cannot undo the use of animals in the past, but why the hell do we need pets?
Again, for selfish personal reasons........
- Companionship (because humans screw each other over so we use the helpless animals to keep us company, to compensate for the love and affection we do not get from each other, to save ourselves from despair and loneliness).
- Social status and distinction (families/ individuals with pets automatically become cool and complete and a model household that the rest of the world should aspire for. A house, a family/ kids, a car..........is not enough, until there is at least one pet in the house too).
- Show-off/ glamour and the internet economy - (the first 2 reasons above were just too few, so now we have the final and most lucrative reason of all - garner attention for yourself on a global scale, at the expense of the pets. Record every little thing they do, make them do tricks, record them intrusively, invading their privacy which they have none of because they are not human beings and we are their masters. Get famous entirely on their lives. And still keep going).
And to fulfill these needs, exists the pet industry. Captive breeding, training, pet-products, pet-care......
In the end, for all the pets that are exploited for their companionship, status and glamour value, humans do not guarantee that every single one of those pets will be cared for, until they die. There is no telling how many of those pets get abandoned sooner or later. How many become strays, how many get abused and left for dead.
There is absolutely no reason, for people to keep pets, just for the heck of it in today's world.
The only reason and time when it is acceptable to keep a pet, is if it was rescued or taken in; saved from abuse or a risky fate. And such people who have pets that are 100% rescued or adopted are the only true rightful keepers of pets.
One might argue that, animals were made to be used by humans. But that statement only completely dissolves the quality that makes us humans - our ability to think beyond our selfish selves.
Humans do not need pets, same as we do not need fast/ junk food.
Pet-free, rationally.
