Why bother with children’s fare?

So I’m looking to take my kids to Melbourne for the first time to watch the footy. They’re 9 and 11 this year. I just did a booking enquiry for flights and selected 1 adult and 2 children. The price breakdown shows them to be exactly the same.
So why bother splitting adults and children? Why not just book “by the seat”?
