I have a client who hurt there back many months back. They are not technically still injured, but is left with this daily pain in their lower back. Their doctors also never really knew what was injured but suggested a strain or muscle sprain. (They were lifting something when it occurred). After working with physio for months, they experienced no relief. We began working on strengthening there core (to be preventive in the future and to hopefully alleviate some stress on the back) as well as helping with postural imbalances (upper back and upper body in general). These things have not changed the back pain. We have found they feel much relief not from stretching their hamstrings and back, but from doing hamstring curls and back extensions. I know often it’s a matter of stretching out the lower body to relieve the stress on the lower back, but in this case strengthening is what provides relief. We have continued to do these things since they are making them feel good, but me as a trainer am curious as to what’s actually going on.
I’m just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what may be going on in there back (I know to be certain a doctor needs to evaluate but that has already happened and nothing has come from it). I’m not looking for an actual diagnoses, but want to be able to tailor there training as best as I can to help them move past this pain.
Thanks!
