My first ever client - and it is coaching not necessarily training. I will not be in the gym with him, my job is to assign him a nutrition guide and workout plan.

He wants to join ‘1000lb club’. His only equipment at home is adjustable dumbbells up to 90lbs. He claims when his workout is at a gym, his adherence starts to slip. He has almost max’d out his weights at home. He wants to do minimal time in the gym.

I see no way of him reaching his goals without at least 3-4 days in a gym with proper equipment. Obviously, we need to improve his squats, deadlifts and bench, which all require gym equipment and I would like him to train them on seperate days. And, I believe he needs gym equipment for a solid back workout (but if anyone has any ideas let me know.)

This guy has a history of being a little bit delulu and is at 13 with little muscle definition. As I work for a company, and I’m the only certified trainer, I am the only one that can work with him. It is a non-traditional coaching situation.

If anyone has any ideas, insight or resources, it would be much appreciated. Like I said, this is my first client ever. I am not unwilling to tell him his goal isn’t reasonable with the limitations but I want to make sure I do everything in my power before I say that.

Edit: Thanks for the wonderful advice! I cannot refuse clients since I don’t work for myself, but everyone has been so helpful that I’ve got a bit of a game plan now and it is looking much more doable than before. I would also like to say since many of you are acting like my client is refusing to go to a gym, the client and I have already established gym time will be necessary and I made this post to ask 1) how minimal can we get? And 2) how to program it. I don’t need help on telling him his goals are outlandish, I’ve done it before with him and will do it again if needed. I was specifically asking for technical advice, not for advice on how to talk to clients. I have been coaching weight loss with people for much longer than this and that is 10x more awful when it comes to teaching people expectation management.
