So earlier this year, our accountant informed us that our joint AGI will exceed the income limits for a Roth IRA, and that my wife and I should forgo contributing to our already existing Roth IRA accounts so we don't get hit by penalties. My wife is self-employed and opened a SEP Ira in her name earlier this year so she could continue to save, I have a 401K with my current employer that I throw money into.
Anyways, we continued to set aside the money we would normally contribute to our Roth IRA's in years past while we figured out the best thing to do with our retirement savings. I've read up on Backdoor Roth conversions, and from what I gather, this will be the most optimal way for me to continue to save retirement funds, but not my wife since she has a SEP IRA.
So my two questions are, can I do a backdoor Roth conversion even though my wife has a SEP IRA and we file our taxes jointly? And if I do one, will I get hit with pro-rata when we file our taxes next year because of that SEP IRA account?
Thanks in advance!
