Helped my friend cosign for a car, now hes late on payments.

About a year ago I cosigned with my friend to get a loan for a car with me being the main signer. Fast forward to now, and he is always late on payments and it is hurting my credit.
He barely works just enough to not get it repossessed. He won't give me the keys because he has family relying on him among other reasons. How do I get the car back? Can I get it towed?
