My former payee for disability never paid any of my debts

My mother was my payee for SSDI for years. She was abusive and ended up kicking me out of the house again (it all started because I'm gay, but anyway...). I asked her to pay my medical debts many times, but she never would, and they went to collections. I have a new payee now, and she's trying to help me fix my credit. Is there anything I can do about it, since legally my payee is responsible for this? I just need to fix my credit so I can find a place to live.
