401k at work or Roth IRA?

How’s it going? I’m 30 years old and just recently set up my 401K with my employer; stupid to wait this long I know. At the moment I’m contributing 6% of my check with my employer matching 5%. I have to be honest and say I feel like I’m behind in saving for retirement. So now I’m trying to catch up. I’m wondering if I should max my 401k out, which is 10% and just let it rise, or if I keep it at 6% and open a Roth IRA and manage that separately. My employer will still only match upto 5%. My goal is maximum gain for retirement. I don’t plan to pull the money sooner than that. Should I split my money and diversify my investment? Or should I just invest in my 401k for now? Thank you for your advice.
