I think I need more credit to boost my Fico Score, right?

I've finally stopped carrying any balances on my three cards. But after a long bout of debt issues, my total avail credit is very low (6.5k). Now that I'm demonstrating great habits, I need more credit to boost my Fico Score, right? I guess I just need to wait for some good offers. Would you agree I need to demonstrate I can carry more credit and not abuse it? Also: Do I need to actively look for cards or should they be mailing me soon enough? Current Fico score is: 640.
