PPO vs HDHP+HSA
Post Body

Hi PF,

I've always had the PPO (because I never really looked more beyond it since the cost seems reasonable); but this year there seems to be lots of advertising from HR for the HDHP with HSA (they basically just call it "HSA plan" so for simplicity of this post, I will call it HSA). There is also a third one, a HDHP with HRA, but it seems pretty garbage when I read it, so I will leave it out.

Some numbers:

PPO | HSA

  • Premium (monthly): $94 | $53
  • Annual Deductible: $500 | $2000
  • Coinsurance 15% for both (plan pays 85%)
  • OOP max: $3000 for both if in-network, $6000 for PPO (out-network) and $6200 (out-network), so not a significant difference.
  • Employer contribution to HSA: $500
  • Most primary care are 100% cover under PPO after $30 copay, while HSA is 85% after deductible is met.

As about me--single, 26 years old, "moderately" healthy.
My most significant medical expenses were about $1500 (OOP) a couple of years ago when I had breast biopsies and a few other exams. Other than that, I've paid a few trips to the doctor this year because I have some migraine and insomnia problems. I've also gone into urgent care (not ER) a few times when I had back pain (muscle spasms). So, here and there expenses which led me to think my PPO choice is superior.
No kids next year or the like.

So with this profile and the medical plans as offered, does this make sense for me to continue going with PPO?

Another piece of info which I'm not sure is relevant, is I max my retirement plan (employer contributes 10% max) but not IRA (I can, but that would put me under some really tight financial budget).

Thanks for your help!
