Please ELI5 how to take money out of my 401k

I'm in a bit of a financial crunch. I've really cracked down on my budget, but it's not enough. My expenses have doubled recently and i'll leave the dirty details out as to why. I need to take a few thousand out of my 401k. But I don't want to hurt myself more than help myself. I know this is a last resort kind of thing, but I just want to know 1.)how it can effect me negatively. 2.) if there is interest Thanks in advance!
