Hi, PF.
So, as the title says, my brother recently began at a new job in BC, Canada. Door-to-door salesman of vacuums, which already gives me bad vibes, but it's just a summer job. He's making $16/hour commision on his sales.
However, his job requires him to drive to potential customers' houses in his own private vehicle, carrying the products. We've estimated this at ~55KM/day, plus occasional toll bridges. He has briefly asked his boss if the driving is compensated, and was told no, it was not. His only compensation is his hourly wage, which he does get paid while driving.
My question is if this is allowed. It doesn't make sense to me that a company can require a personal vehicle to perform the job and not get paid for mileage and tolls.
My brother isn't too disheartened by losing the ~$60/week for gas and tolls, but this is still equivalent to several hours of pay.
I did some light research online and saw that in the US, companies do not have to compensate for personal vehicle use, but I couldn't find a clear answer for Canada. The most I found was that, under certain conditions, he can make a tax-deduction for his vehicle use during work hours.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
