How long does it usually take for a check to clear?

Sorry if this is the wrong place.
I deposited a payroll check into my ally checking account last Friday night. It has only just appeared in my account yesterday and is reflected in my current balance but not the available balance. How long until it is available? Also I was charged an overdraft fee while I waited for the funds to clear.
