U.S. If I am not a permanent legal resident, should I still start a retirement account?

Post Body

Hi PF, I am a teacher in California, and I am wondering what would happen to my retirement account if I were to lose my legal status or who knows, even be deported in the future? (You never know now). Would I lose the right to claim whatever contributions I made while I was here legally? Is there any point in me opening an IRA for the future if there is a chance I might not get to live out the rest of my life in the U.S.? Would losing status mean that I would I lose access to the money, or simply that there would be some tax implications? How could a person even try to sort these things out if they are not allowed to come to the U.S.?
Thanks so much in advance for your help.
