Dealership vs. mechanic for car repairs
Post Body

All four of my Nissan’s brake pads and rotors needed replacing. I took it to the local Nissan dealership for service because I have read that dealers are more reputable since they are familiar with the car, have the appropriate parts, etc. I’ve also been hosed by mechanics in the past, so I wasn’t sure if going to the dealership would help me avoid that, but they’re quoting me around $1900 for new brake pads and rotors. Should I have gone to a mechanic instead? I would have gone to a few others to get quotes, but unlike the dealership, they charge to inspect the car and I didn’t want to rack up a few hundred dollars in inspection charges. I also live in the DC area which may or may not affect the price of repairs since the cost of living is so damn high here.
