So I made a post a few weeks ago about the ending, and I got blasted for saying it was unfulfilling (that didn't surprise me) but what did make me think was some of the responses. It made me consider what I did and did not like about the game, and I'm wondering if anyone agrees.
First off, it's important to mention that I never played P3FES and I never will, P4G is as far back as I'm willing to go in terms of QoL and graphics.
My first and foremost problem is with the main character, who is completely apathetic and has very little to his character apart from his interactions with others. I think it's possible to make a depressed and cynical character like him actually good, but I don't think many stories (especially not games) get it right. The same is true of Makoto, who even in his final moments doesn't care about much. It just takes away from the confidants and the story specifically.
Speaking on confidants, they're one of the best parts of P3R. They're much better than P4G and probably even beats P5R. There are only really two confidants I didn't love, and they were Tanaka (not much to him, just kinda says funny stuff and then leaves) and Yukari (god i hate yukari). The others were memorable and even on my second playthrough I watched then through.
The ending was the culmination of my issues with the story. Aigis went from comedy relief to confused, philisophical and hysterical forced love interest, and it bummed me out that I didnt like her character anymore. The main character died unceremoniously, your confidants and friends have to live with your death and thats that. It sucks any enjoyment I felt during the ending.
I also noted how the bad ending was intriguing, and how it struck me as less of a bad ending and more of an alternate ending. Of course, people didn't like that either.
Finally, I think the gameplay is refined to be a better P5 system and the music is the best in the series (Full Moon Full Life is objectively the best persona song to date). The characters are alright, they're no Truth Seekers or Phantom Thieves but I mostly like them. Judging from the community, a lot of my problems would be solved by playing as the girl version (or superimposing her personality onto the guy character since I don't really like playing as girls if I can help it).
This took a while to type out, and my phone is chugging so I'm gonna finish this by asking how yall feel about my takeaways from this game. It's also worth mentioning that I do in fact like this game, I'm glad I had the chance to play it (gamepass is a real one).
If this isn't allowed bc its too long, mods fell free to take this down
