Confused with the beginning of the game

Hi all! I started persona 3 reload last night and I am beyond confused. I only ever played Persona 5 Royal before this. Do I just keep going up the staircase at my own pace? The network thing says everyone is hanging with confidants but I don't know where things even are. I am like 15 floors up in Tartarus. This game is much less guided than 5 and is overwhelming to me so please help somebody
