Pentax 645NII — focus lock doesn’t work for the life of me.

I know it’s a long shot, but I recently picked up a Pentax 645NII - and everything seems to work just fine… except I cannot get focus lock to work. I’ve read the manual. I have the C/S switch sent to S. I have metering set to spot. I hold down the shutter and the AF constantly focuses as I recompose.
I thought maybe the C/S switch was basically stick operating as C regardless of position, but it only allows one frame per actuation as it should.
Any advice?
