The dissection of the photo finish by laflammerouge16 and others on Twitter has led me to the conclusion that WvA was indisputably first past the finish line defined by the camera, but the camera was placed before the finish line painted on the road. So Wout won to the line officially being raced to, and Pidcock won to the line the riders were actually racing to. Hard to find a worse break than that
I understand both of these points, but is the fault not then that the UCI defines the finishing line at a place they can’t measure? Having the camera there is fine, but it’s ridiculous to then define the finish line as somewhere the camera cannot be aimed. What is the point of defining the finishing line as the black line if that never serves as the actual finish line?
Also, I can't find any reference to these issues in the UCI's Practical Guide for the finish judge. What exactly are you referencing?
Wout won to the official line (as defined by the camera placement), Pidcock won to the line they thought they were racing to (the actual black line on the road)
That’s fair. I think we can say he likely won by the distance from the line and what we know about the riders current positions and speed, but we cannot be sure. I think the UCI should admit fault (lololol) with the camera placement and call it a dead heat.
You’re gonna have to re-read that first line
The rules explicitly state that the finish line is the beginning of the black line.
That’s not where the camera is. It seems their regulations for camera placement do not match with their regulations of what the finish line actually is.

The preposition describing the necessary surroundings of the finish line does not change what it says the line is. The line shall be comprised of 4cm painted black. That’s the line. It does not list multiple things. It lists one thing, the black line, and then describes what must be around it.
