Hey all! I just had to get refingerprinted and no longer have the example or instructions to fill it out. If anybody could send a picture of their instructions and example it would immensely appreciated, so I can go mine out right.
For reference, and those also being hung up by this issue: my original form and instructions was sent to me in Spring of 2021, and was the SF-87 2017 revision form. I heard other volunteers were having issues and, because I don't have a lot of time to get my clearances completed (I'm leaving my town for a remote job soon) I reached out to Peace Corps to see if I was affected and what I had to do about it. I was affected, and they offered to send a new legal kit which, in my situation, would not have arrived in time for my to send it back. They also said I could have it done myself with an FD-258 form, which I got printed on resume-stock paper, cut to size, and fingerprinted on. Now I just have to fill out the categories and want to make sure I have any Peace Corps specific boxes filled out right and shipped to the right place.
PSA: For anybody who received their legal around earlier during covid and held onto it until their invitations, Peace Corps is no longer accepting them and, I at least, had no communication from Peace Corps that I was affected by this or that this was even the case. If I hadn't seen other posts and comments on Reddit, I never would have known and my outdated legal kit (which is currently mailed in) would've been/will be rejected. So, if you want to get ahead of the curve on it as I'm sure we all do, reach out for a new legal kit or for instructions on how to do the self-printed fingerprint form. PEACE CORPS WILL NOT TELL YOU THAT YOU NEED TO DO THIS UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE, in my experience.
The full response I got from them ([email protected]) about this is copied below:
If you used fingerprints cards you received in Spring 2021, then they are the SF-87 2017 version and are obsolete. Our office updated our fingerprint cards earlier this year and our processing partners will no longer accept the 2017 version of the SF-87 cards.
Due to this update, new fingerprint cards will be required. Please provide a current mailing address and phone number and we can send you a new legal kit with the updated fingerprint cards.
If you are concerned that you will not receive the correct fingerprint cards in time due to your time constraints, you may contact local fingerprinting services and find out if they offer the FD-258s as an alternative. If you obtain the FD-258 version, please ensure they are certified. Certified FD-258 cards will be explicitly labeled to say FD-258. Some locations may have their own local fingerprint cards that will look like the FD-258 version, but will not explicitly state the fingerprint version on the front, but will rather have a stamp on the back. This is not sufficient and the fingerprint cards must specifically state what version they are (usually found on the front).
Please note that legal clearances take upwards of 2-4 months to process and candidates cannot depart for service without a valid legal clearance. We strongly recommend you complete the fingerprinting process with valid fingerprint cards and return them to us as soon possible to prevent any delays in the processing and initiation of your background investigation. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns
Sincerely,
Legal Placement Team
