What can we do for next steps regarding the Universal Background Check and future anti-gun laws?
Post Body

Today was the opportunity for resistance, and it completely fizzled to my disappointment. In fact, it would be easy to say that it was a non-starter.

There will be one more public testimony opportunity when it is introduced to the House, and the House will probably do the exact same thing: limit testimony to 2 minutes because they don't care about citizen's input.

  • Writing our congressmen is one thing we can do, but remember those decks are stacked and funded by a lobbyist group.

  • Another plausible avenue is a complete rejection of this bill by the Oregon Sheriff’s Association. So, writing and calling your local Sheriff and asking them to oppose this legislation would go a long way. Do note that Washington County, Linn, Grant, Yamhill, Douglas, and Columbia County have all spoken out against it. People living in Multnomah County are especially encouraged to contact their Sheriff, Daniel Staton: 503-988-4300

  • Another avenue that might raise attention is for county commissioners to again reaffirm they are opposed to universal background checks. Several counties did this over the last few months.

  • Otherwise, I don’t think Democrats pushing this bill have much concern for the hunting industry or firearm industry this will impact. Still, encouraging businesses (like gun stores) to write in opposition of this might be helpful. At this point it probably makes sense to focus primarily on members of the House.

It will probably be introduced on the senate floor tomorrow and get it’s readings, possibly a vote. I'm not trying to be a defeatist here, I'm trying to be realistic. It’s possible Republicans will stonewall this thing on the senate floor, or possible they might offer a compromise such as allowing buyers and sellers to call into OSP rather than going to an FFL (which would be useless, but has been suggested), a lot of things can happen tomorrow and next week.

Already today additional firearm restrictions have been introduced: SB945 – this would require you to keep guns locked up and away from children, if you violate this law not only are you facing a misdemeanor, your right to possess/own/use guns are taken away for five years. Is that insane? Yes. It’s abso-fucking-loutely insane. Taking guns away for 5 years is more than likely going to be pulled out before the final bill, but this is the level of anti-gun extremism we’re dealing with.

Assuredly we will see other restrictions coming as well: most certainly a ban on “high capacity magazines” will be introduced in the very near future.

The sky is the limit folks. If Bloomberg’s team get even a single success out of this state they will double down efforts to make Oregon’s firearm laws as onerous as New York’s. No folding stocks, no muzzle devices, prohibit class 3 in civilian hands… Anything can happen when these people get organized and face no resistance.

If you have any interest in "organizing serious resistance" you should step up and spearhead anything you think is a valuable activity or at least propose it below.
