Been out of the loop for a while, what kind of protection setup are people using these days?

Apologies if this isn't the right place for this, but here goes-its been about 10 years since I last had a PC, and am about to get a new, medium-high (I think) end setup next week, but am so far out of the loop when it comes to virus and spyware/malware suites. Back in my day, I ran the Avira free anti-virus suite, and Spybot Search and Destroy, and Spyware Blaster.

I'd always tried to stay away from the big name antiviris protection, as they were resource hogs and would kill my system. Soooooo, I have to assume some things have changed in the last decade, and am wondering what you all are running. I'm good with either free or paid, though I suspect there are plenty of free resources available, I just don't know what I need to be looking for at this point.
