Question about "reusing" Windows keys

I'm about to rebuild my PC, I mean everything. I just wanted to know if I could reuse the windows key I have now attached to the PC or if I need to rebuy windows. I heard awhile ago that there was a number that you could call or text that would make you send your key in and they would generate a new one for you, is that true? Do they have a system like that?
