Why you should/should not upgrade to Windows 10 or use it for a new PC, from someone who DOESN'T like it.
Post Body

If you downvote PLEASE tell me why.

Disclaimer: I don't dislike 10 because it's a bad OS, as I'll elaborate on below. I am just pretty sure it'd uninstall some of my programs if I upgrade, and I'm not a fan of the bugs.

Why you SHOULD use Windows 10 (applies to upgrades and fresh installs)

  • Improved memory management over previous Windows versions, and a higher memory capacity cap in the basic Home edition.

  • Lower system overhead from the OS.

  • Improved desktop management (virtual desktops, improved snapping).

  • Ability to source Windows 10 update files from other Windows 10 PCs in your LAN that have already received the update.

  • Support for newer DirectX versions including DX12. (Vulkan is still better though.)

  • Support for Windows 7 completely ends in 2020, and 8 / 8.1 after that. 10 is supposedly going to be the Microsoft OS that lasts until the end of Microsoft, so you should hopefully not have to upgrade again.

  • Skylake and onward Intel processors are no longer going to be supported by Windows versions before 7. It's an annoying move, but nevertheless it's a reason to consider 10.

Why you shouldn't use Windows 10 (for both upgrades and fresh installs)

  • While not everyone will have them and it is entirely possible you may not encounter them at all, there are some nasty glitches that have yet to be fixed in W10. A standout example is the bug where the Start menu can't be opened at all (click, key combo, etc), and the only manual solution has a high chance to break the Windows Store.

  • W10 has a lot of "cloud-enabled" (aka share all your browsing and OS search history with Microsoft and give out your Wi-Fi password to Microsoftbook friends) features, which you'll need to turn off manually in several different submenus, and some of them have been turning themselves back on with updates.

Why you shouldn't upgrade to Windows 10 (specifically upgrade from a previous OS)

  • Certain programs may simply cease to work with W10, and as far as I'm aware, the upgrade utility does not give you any forewarning of which programs will be disabled.

  • Besides that, just make a backup before you upgrade and if you don't like it you can go back.
