First attempt at building a PC for gaming

Hi everyone, I'm going to be attempting to build a gaming PC after spending to much time using my laptop to try to game on. I've got no idea what things to consider in my build. I want a rig that can handle the new content like Overwatch, but it doesn't have to be able to push max settings for everything. My budget is $1100 CAD (for the rig alone, not including peripherals or monitor) and any advice would be really appreciated.
Edit: add an extra 40% to convert the cost from USD to CAD
