Help with my Steam Overlay

I need help getting my Steam Overlay to work (and I already went to /r/techsupport and got no responses) on my MacBook Pro. I have Overlay controls set and Universal access allowed for Steam on my laptop but when I'm in-game I can't pull it up and nothing works. I've tried updating, restarting Steam and my laptop, and basically whatever I could find through Google with no success. Anyone want to help a Heathen out? Thanks in advance for any help :)
