Basically the title. I acquired an old computer for free with an i3 in it and I want to replace it with an i7. I know how to swap out the processors physically, that seems pretty easy. What I don't know is the software side. Do I install new drivers? Wipe the old ones and replace them? I don't know how that part works, as I've never built a PC or played with drivers much besides restarting them. I understand computer hardware very well and have done plenty of laptop repairs, this will just be my first time working on a desktop. I understand them obviously, I'm just a bit nervous about swapping in a new CPU.
Yes, I checked the new CPU is compatible with the motherboard. This computer is a prebuilt running on Intel 7th gen, so I'll be putting in an i7-7700 as that is the highest processor supported according to the manufacturer.
