At wits end with error 0x80073cfe and looking for advice. Might have to wipe PC.

Hello PC Master Race,

I've been running into the dreaded error 0x80073cfe in the windows store for months now when trying to update the Xbox app for PC. Since the app is so out of date, I cannot use the app at all until it's updated. I've tried literally every troubleshooting method I could find, including reinstalling windows 10 (with the keep all files and programs option). It seems my only two options now are A. give up on ever using Xbox Gamepass for PC again or B. reformat all my drives and do a completely fresh install of Windows 10. Before I take the drastic option B. I thought I would come here to seek your advice on if that's the only thing left I can try, and if so, what the best way to go about it is. Here's some context as to my set up and why deleting everything is going to be such a huge pain in the ass.

Drives - This was the first PC I built and the drive situation was a hodge-podge as I kept needing more space. I have an m.2 SSD which is my C: drive and has windows installed on it. I have a D: drive that is a 2TB HDD. Then I added a 1TB SATA SSD. Having these three drives along with the possibility that I set them up incorrectly (as far as partitions, access, etc) is what I think is most likely causing my error. I also have games installed on all three. In addition, I'm a musician and have a drum software program that has a library of sounds equivalent to about 200GB that I would have to redownload if I go the full wipe route. Lastly, of course I have a bunch of mods installed for various games that would all go away after a full reset.

So with all this said, are there any unique troubleshooting options you can think of that I can try? If not, what is the best way to do the full wipe while maintaining some of my old file folder structures and contents? Maybe get a big ass removable SSD and move all my documents/videos/images to that?

Edit: Things I've tried

  • Use powershell to check for corrupt files on windows
  • User DISM tool in powershell to attempt to restore health
  • Reset windows update components in power shell
  • Reset Windows Update Cache file
  • Reinstall the MS store
  • Uninstall/Delete any Xbox games files/folders from D: and E: drive
  • Checked Registry to make sure PackageRepositoryRoot existed
  • Did the windows 10 repair/reinstall tool (keep all files and programs)
  • Try all the above in safe mode
  • Try all the above with Windows Defender turned off
