For me, there are two ways a game can âsurviveâ in collective consciousness for a long time:
Games that stay with you personally. A game that still continues to enter your thoughts after months or years of having finished it. It doesnât even have to do with it being good! You maybe just had a lot of fun or itâs linked to a specific memory.
Seeing the inspiration of those acclaimed games on other projects. Breath of the Wild, Dark Souls, The Last of Us⌠Whatever opinions you have with these games, itâs impossible to deny they received a lot of praise and had influenced ton of titles in the last couple of years.
While, both ways can coincide (a beloved game you also love), I feel like P.T. belongs in the second point. In fact, itâs not rare to see people calling it âThe best horror game that never was releasedâ. I can kinda see it but at the same time no.
I can honestly see a blind playthrough of this game being intimidating at least (not scary but thatâs more me than the game itself). The game slowly introduces some unsettling stuff like the fact that youâre stuck on a loop, a bloody fridge or that fantastic scene where you run fast and see tons of real eyes looking at you. Also, the scene where you see Lisa standing in the middle of the hallway reminds me of a similar scene with Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2. Quoting that meme, sheâs just standing there menacingly and the fact that you have to continue forward makes it better. In fact, even if the game itself doesn't really have anything to do with Silent Hill, you can see the team took inspiration mainly from SH4: The Room which is cool since every western studio was looking at SH2 to make their game.
Another great thing was that even if I was playing a fan-remake on PC, the game looked and sounded fantastic. I canât believe Kojima saying he wanted the game to look indie because itâs simply not true. And the sound is also nice, I felt shivers listening to 204863 in its original context.
To be honest the only moment where it felt a bit flat was the last puzzle. Itâs not only very abstract just for the sake of being abstract but I couldnât finish it. I couldnât trigger the second babyâs laugh and after that I would only had 2 minutes left until the ending. But I didnât get it and it was frustrating trying it over and over. The other puzzles were nice though.
--------------
P.T. is the kind of horror game I enjoy. It doesnât necessarily scare me but it has a good atmosphere along with some nice details and for me, thatâs what I mostly want from horror games (specially if they are short). I feel like the game is too big for its legacy (the hype was mostly from Kojima, Del Toro and Junji Ito working on the main game, and most of its imitators donât really capture the scene) But even after all the hype, I can say I appreciate this game and some of its reputation is well deserved. Now I only hope for the next Kojima game being horror and you dear reader leaving a comment telling me what do you think about P.T. Itâs not some weird youtube engaging thing, I genuinely want to know what people on this sub think about the game. Maybe you loved it, hated it, think it was overhyped...
