I’m 21, and, for a bunch of reasons, I’ve barely played any games over the last decade. Before this year, the last games I’d played through properly were probably RuneScape and Pokémon Platinum in ~2009.
Now, I know the dominant narrative tends to be that games are getting worse, or at least improving at a slower rate, as time goes on. However, the 4 games I’ve played so far this year were so mindblowingly good that I have no idea how this narrative even came about. The games were: Red Dead Redemption 2, Divinity Original Sin 2, Bloodborne and Disco Elysium. I wouldn’t hesitate to call all 4 of these games modern artistic masterpieces.
Anyway, all this to say that if my experience so far this year is anything to go by, games aren’t getting worse - in fact, I think they’re better than they ever have been (just so long as you’re careful and thorough in selecting which games to play).
Edit: A lot of people are saying this should basically be amended to: the median AAA game was better then, but the best games are better now.
Also, thanks so much for all the suggestions. I’ve added/bumped up the following on my list as a result of this thread: The Witcher 3, Persona 5 Royal, Tyranny, Mass Effect, Pillars of Eternity, The Last Of Us
Appreciate that you included Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny in your to-play list. I have no idea how the narrative 'Obsidian fell off' came about. They have made only one game that isn't exceptional -The Outer Worlds (and even that one is a solid 8/10)- recently. Deadfire is criminally underrated.
