Mario and Luigi paper Jam Bros: A mixture of enjoyable and annoying
Post Body

Out of all the Mario and Luigi games I've played so far, this one gave me mixed feelings overall. I enjoyed the game

but there were times I found myself being annoyed with it. Here are the things I loved and hated about the game, I'm going to also somewhat compare it to other M and L games I have played. This isn't in any particular order.

Like/dislike: finding paper toad quests - There were some paper toad quests I genuinely enjoyed: Finding hidden paper toads, solving puzzles to find paper toads, sneaking around so enemies don't catch you. However, there were some paper toad missions I really wasn't a fan of: having to run around chasing paper toads, protecting them from sand enemies, having to save them from shy guys under a time limit etc. My biggest gripe with paper toad quest is that the game requires you to rescue every single one of them (as far as I'm aware) and it won't let you proceed until you've rescued the required amount of paper toads. In Dream Team bros, you are required to rescue the pillo's- however, the game does not require you to rescue every single one and you have the option of choosing if you want to rescue all of the pillo's. But here, there isn't much of a choice.

dislike: How you upgrade your stats- so in previous M & L games, every time you level up, you can choose to upgrade a stat even further. However, in paper jam bros, there isn't an option to upgrade your stat when you level up - instead you can only upgrade stats when you go up a rank. it's a minor change, but I liked that you could upgrade a stat every time you level up.(yes, I'm aware you can use beans to upgrade stats.)

dislike: How you get your bros attacks - in previous games (with the exception of superstar saga and Partner's in time) you had to find pieces of these attack blocks -usually by exploring the world or in some cases solving quizzes. I really enjoyed how the previous games did it, as it gave me some incentive to explore the worlds more carefully. But in this one? You have to chase some annoying rabbit (Nabbit) to get your bros attacks. Chasing Nabbit was annoying and not fun in the slightest.

Like: Quick Change overworld Bros moves- I can't remember if any of the previous games had this, but in this one, when you learn a bros move it comes up on the screen, and you can select that move, as oppose to pressing R to go through the moves until you select the right one. I thought this was a good change as it saves time, especially in areas where you have to use multiple ones.

dislike: Mini games - I don't know if it's just me, but holy moly is this game just ridiculed with mini games, to the point where it got annoying. What annoyed me is that it would ruin the pacing of the game for me. e.g.: you are exploring bowser's castle then oops! Toadette been kidnapped!, better aeroplane around and catch her before the shy guy gets away! (the game constantly interrupts gameplay and makes you play some unnecessary mini game) Yes, previous games had mini games as well, but I felt that it didn't ruin the pacing as they were used to progress the story.(Bowser's inside story did this the best imo.)

Like: Skip feature - When you are struggling with the mini-games this game constantly throws at you, it does give you the option to skip them and proceed with the story. I've only used this feature once, and that was more because I couldn't be bothered playing the mini game.

dislike: Papercraft battles - I just wasn't a fan of the paper craft battles, especially when you had to use that stupid musical beat to upgrade your power. They weren't hard, in fact they were incredibly easy, but they just weren't any fun for me. Heck, I wasn't a fan of the Giant battles in BIS and DT, but I much prefer those to the papercraft battles. At least they were still enjoyable somewhat.

Like: Humour - if there is anything I really liked about this game, it's the humour -here are some moments that gave me a chuckle:

-Wiggler having a group of angel goomba's taking him away, causing everyone to believe he's died, only for him to return as a "butterfly"

- Mario and crew arguing with the koopalings, starlo telling Luigi to put his Stache back on because it fell off and Luigi not realising he's standing on the wrong side of the face off.

- " I can't lose to them, I have a moustache! oh wait, so do they."

- Kamek complimenting Starlo's teeth - at first, I thought Kamek was using it as a trick, but no, it turns out he really does like Starlo's teeth.

- Kamek and paper Kamek having a heartfelt moment, only for Kamek to call his paper counterpart a hideous ugly brother

- Toadette somehow making it into bowser's castle and suddenly just building a papercraft out of nowhere.

- Wendy beating the shit out of Roy if he accidently hits her with a rock during their boss battle.

Like: Soundtrack: This pretty much goes for all the M & L games. but the soundtrack is always a banger. My favourites in this one are the final boss theme, Big bang, where's toad, time's running out, floating castle of doom and come on!

Like: Battle System: Like the previous M&L games ,I really liked the battle system and I thought paper Mario was a nice addition to the team. The bros attacks were pretty fun, however I wish they used some newer ones, as a lot of them were already used in previous games. Wasn't too keen on the trio attacks to be honest, only one I used was the racket. PM's copy ability was pretty cool as well.

OTHER

Poor Luigi, you would think after the events of dream team, people would have more respect for the poor guy but he's constantly put down and

compared to his older brother Mario. it sucks, because the Luigi is a kind soul that looks up to his brother, and it must hurt when he's constantly told that he's useless and he'll never be as good as Mario " He's very caring towards Luigi, who, let's face it, is Luigi."

it would have been cool to see paper Luigi as well.

Bowser JR is an asshole, but I kind of felt for him regarding his friendship with paper Bowser JR. He's probably really lonely and this was the first friend he ever had.

The Goomba tricking you into giving the medallion was pretty obvious and a bit disappointing. Would have been cool if he genuinely turned over a new leaf

Main antagonist is pretty standard compared to previous M & L games: SS had Cackaletta, PIT had princess Shroob, BIS had Fawful/dark star and dream team had Antasma and here you just have bowser again.

Overall, I enjoyed the game, but there were a lot of things that I found tedious/annoying about it. To be honest, I think this one has to be my least favourite in the M & L series.

What are your thoughts on the game and why?
