Red Faction Geurilla; The Michael Bay action flick of video games
Post Body

Platform played on: PC

Time played: 26 hours

The destruction in this game is still unmatched. Every building or object in this game can be blown to pieces and it is absolutely awesome; with the game consistently giving you new toys and set pieces which up the destructible ante.

This, of course, is the centerpiece of the game with the whole game engine being to devoted to destruction. It was amazing back then on the last gen consoles, and it is just as, if not more, amazing now that the game can be run at an incredibly smooth 60 fps (I played the remastered edition).

The game outside of the destruction is entirely generic open world fair. The missions almost always consist of the following three objectives: go there and blow up the thing, go there and defend the thing, and/or go there and deactivate the thing. Nothing special. Likewise with the side quests, which consist of more of the same or timed racing and destruction (i.e. destroy a building under set conditions). This ultimately wound up being the game's biggest downfall for me after a couple dozen hours.

However, within the generic mission setup inlays the freedom to do missions how you see fit; a make-your-own-fun type of deal. This can be great or terrible depending on what kind of person you are. For me, loading a vehicle up with 15 mines, gassing it over a cliff, dipping out before the cliff's edge, crashing the vehicle through the roof, and denoting the charges while watching the building blow into thousands of pieces was an absolute an absolute blast. That being said, the same mission can also be played out just running and gunning individual soldiers down, which would get extremely old extremely quickly. The game actively encourages experimentation though, giving you tools such as a missile launcher that can destroy massive chunks of buildings, vortex bombs, and structure that are setup in such a way were they fall down in very satisfying ways.

I played the remastered version of the game on PC. I did not notice much of a difference in the remastered version outside of a few graphical updates. I originally played the 360 version years ago. The PC that the game was played on is pretty good, with most of the time spent well above 100fps, but I would imagine most PCs would be able to play this game at a locked 60fps no problems, especially after toning down some setting. I did not get a chance to play the multiplayer.

The game did ultimately grow boring after 26 hours of play, mostly due to the racing and side missions which pop intermiddetly being a drag; sitting and waiting for a side mission to become available is no fun. 26 hours is a good chunk of time and a great value considering I bought the game for the price of a candy bar.

If destruction is your bag and you dig games such a Just Cause, definitely give this one a go, you will not regret it.
