I saw yesterday a pretty popular post prompting readers to discuss the inverse of this: games that had set high expectations but utterly disappointed. While every discussion on there was completely valid, all the negativity felt utterly depressing to read. So I wanted to bring a palette cleanser to the table and lighten the mood a considerable amount. Hence, this post.
One game that I distinctly remember doing a complete 180 on in terms of my reception was Sonic Colors. I played the original Wii version when I was much younger, about 2017, expecting a totally unenjoyable experience. Having grown up on the more mature 3D Sonic games that made an effort to tell a thrilling story, Colors's tonal shift and emphasis on 2D platforming seemed like a total turnoff. But then I played it and, I mean, it's pretty insane how good the game actually is. Sure, the writing is horrible, but the gameplay is at the front seat for the first time in years and it felt a lot like playing a Mario game in terms of how much it wanted the player to, first and foremost, have fun. Not to mention, for a game on the weakest console of the seventh generation, it looked DAMN good. It was really carried by its art style as Aquarium Park is still a really beautiful level to this day, and I LOVE the music for every single part of the game. I completely forgot how ready I was to hate it.
That being said, what games did you feel completely different about after playing?
Subnautica for me. Went into it with no real expectations and it became one of my absolute favourite games of all time.
This is a great shout, I'd forgotten about this one. Thought it was a brilliant game and definitely had low expectations since movie tie-ins are often so crap.
Yeah very much the same for me. I absolutely need a story in a game, or for there to be a definite end point and I thought Subnautica's was great. This is why I love The Forest but don't enjoy games like Don't Starve.
Personally, I think it's one of the least frustrating grinding games out there. There are of course some frustrating parts, like trying to find ship pieces etc. But there are things you can build to help you locate said materials and make it a breeze!
Yeah I would encourage anyone who plays it to read nothing about it before hand and just dive in. Literally and figuratively 😋
Games like this certainly aren't for everyone but I'm not averse to a bit of a grind in my games 😁

I think this is one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much. From the off, I played on the hardest mode, permadeath etc. and the challenge of that just elevated everything. I felt genuine fear at times when I came across new enemies, or as I went deeper and deeper into a new area, knowing that if there was some disaster there was no way I was making back to the surface in time. And when I finally finished the game it was just such an incredible feeling.
