I was really enjoying this game for quite a while, loving the Fallout style universe with the party mechanics, but I've just become so fed up of the constant difficulty spikes (playing on ranger difficulty) that I'm just done with it now and really can't see myself finishing it. The balancing just seems so off to me. Every time there's a difficulty spike, you have to get all new gear - both armour and weapons. I don't have an issue with that per se, but making the amount of money you need to buy is such a fucking slog I just can't be arsed with it any more.
I encountered difficulty spikes first in Damonta, then in LA, then the absolutely ridiculous Whittier fight, and just when I thought I didn't have to worry about it any more, I'm in Griffith Park, where the only option I have to kill Jones is to shoot him because my kiss ass isn't high enough. This action turns about 10 paladins on me, all who can kill me with 2 shots because my armour isn't strong enough and I really just can't be fucked getting my gear up to spec. It's a great shame because I have enjoyed so much of it, but like I said, it's just left me totally jaded and deciding to move on from it :(
Yeah I think I'll take a break from it at least, maybe go back to it again. Yeah I sell my old gear, but for example, my current AR for a character of mine is worth about 400 scrap, when the new one I want to get is worth about 2000, and that's just with one character. The sniping from a long range is a good plan, I'll maybe give that a go at some point.
It's not the fact that it's hard I have an issue with. Like you say, to play a game on hard then complain about it being hard is a bit daft. My issue is with how quickly it scales in-game to a ridiculous level. To go from a fight in one area and have your armour work well, to a fight in the next where you are being killed with two shots from a handgun is just crazy IMO. If it only happened once, I would haven't minded as much, but it happens way too often. And yes, I could drop the difficulty, but part of my enjoyment of games is the challenge and overcoming it, but when it's this unbalanced at times, it just makes things less enjoyable for me.
I might do that just to finish the game off but I hate doing it because it feels so cheap. I don't have any issue with games being hard, but when the spikes are this high, and the manner in which you overcome them becomes such a slog (raising the money needed for new gear), that's when I have an issue.

Yeah that's the big problem with it IMO. The difficulty doesn't get gradually harder, where you can gradually get better equipment as you go. You'll get to certain places and find that all of a sudden your squad is getting absolutely hammered with one-shot kills etc no matter how good your positioning etc. And the only way around it is to re-equip your squad with better stuff which costs a fortune!
