Can I build as I go as a novice if I don't care about endgame much?

Not only is figuring all the builds & finding an "approved" one that also is to my liking in flavor & playstyle

I know this depends hugely on which passives/gear/skill & such but requesting just a general idea

If I do whatever wonky build I end up with, and I'm not horrid, can I expect to likely nature it to end game content & do whatever the lowest tier of endgame is?

I'm new to the series but does it seem from the early access that this will be a viable thing in the sequel?
