Without warning, without reason, mists leading to a hellish world emerged across the plane of Toril. From these mists emerged undead abominations, accursed plant life, men who turned into beasts, and horrors that defy categorization. Nations sent their armies, great men and women encased in steel or robed in arcane fabric. Such measures proved to only provide more blood for the invader’s Dark God. Only you, a hero, a legend, born of strife and a desire to protect can possibly save your land from this terrible evil.

Welcome to Curse of Strahd, a familiar setting reimagined as a Dark Fantasy Epic. You are a hero who has willingly entered the mists seeking to stop whatever terrible evil resides within. You are not a poor hapless traveler, but someone of integrity and experience. As a level four adventurer from anywhere across the plane of Toril, your options are varied and you may even have an adventure under your belt.

Are you a Samurai from the Eastern lands of Kara Tur, searching for a way to reclaim her honor after a crushing defeat? Does a wizard of Thay seek to destroy this abomination before the grand Magocracy can court an alliance with the Count Strahd? Is Strahd beseeched by a Druid of the Moonshae Isles who seeks to bring balance to a land torn from the Earth Mother? The possibilities are endless… well, almost endless.

Given the Dark Fantasy theme, expect your character to be a serious participant in the world of Barovia, subject to its many horrors and strife with reasonable reactions. You are also a member of the Forgotten Realms setting, so races specific to Golarion are not allowed for this game. Please also keep in mind that evil characters, while not disallowed, can be very difficult for other players to work with. Whoever you make should be fun for everyone to play with and run for. This game should not be your first Pathfinder Second Edition game in all likelihood. Combats will be fierce, and while they will be in the balanced XP allowances, your enemies will not shy from taking the killing blow. Zombies, wolves, and other monstrosities shall show your fallen friends no mercy. In equal measure, your more intelligent foes shall wield tactics and strategies meant to cut you down and break your spirits. You must rely on your wits, your friends, and your skills to survive.

Barovia may not be as you remember. Strahd is not playing games with you, not in the traditional sense. Encounters with him are not unwinnable bouts where he brutalizes your heroes for cheap shock value, but rather aspects of his power that can slay you and be slain by you. You are not the first to try to end the line of Zarovich. The remains of the heroes who came before litter the land with their remains and lost loot. If your hero perishes, rest assured they shall return, deformed by the will of this land’s master. Strahd wields greater power than he does in his original appearance, acting as a force of terrible power limited only by his ego, hunger for blood, and human echoes that still barely flicker in his black heart.

But take comfort. You will be subjected to terrible trials, yes, but there is Hope, even in this place. There are friendly faces even here, ones you can save, ones who you can call friend. It is for them that you endure, and for them that you fight.
