08 Passat 2.0T. Car died while driving down street, EPC light is now on. car won't start.

Anyone that can lend advice or point me in the right direction, please help. Was just driving down the road this morning, and all of the sudden the engine just died. I coasted to the side of the road, and noticed the EPC light is on. I attempted to start, car. Car cranks, but crank does not sound "normal". I don't know how else to describe that. Please start me on a troubleshooting path for this.
