Trying to tame a 5 year old cockatiel that has been mostly kept as a 'decoration' (hope that's the right word)
Post Body

Long story short, my grandparents had this bird since the start of the covid times or so and now they had to move in to our own house (for reasons I wish not the reveal)

And yeah this bird was mostly kept in a cage and ignored and I want to change it and I have been trying. However, there has been zero progress.

For around two weeks, I basically didn't do much, aside from sitting near him and talking a bit, to let him get used to the place and me

Afterwards came the taming part, I tried going with putting a treat in my palm and let him come on its own but he'd just yank it and go back to doing whatever he wants, and I know patience is important, thus kept going for a week and a half but no progress

I tried to put a treat behind my palm and hope it would work but nothing, no progress, he just hisses and attacks whenever he sees my hand

Also this is my cage for 2 birds but they also need UV lighting to be happy and healthy ( surviving is not thriving) my bird doesn’t destroy much so you could get similar toys as mine to help your bird learn how to play with them

I recommend you do some research on the birds needs. i love this channel

Here’s a great TikTok dude that can teach you a lot https://youtu.be/JcrJ7DAz0M4?si=7USl5-MungO4xVcF

There’s just so much to say inform even know where to start but you need to get him a mineral block or oyster shells or at least calcium block

Also parakeets need iode blocks to keep them from developing diseases you need to get a block of iode this is very important

I’m glad you are trying to help but there’s ALOT to do. This bird is in poor condition

Seeing his cage will tell me ALOT. Don’t worry I know you are not the one who got it but the cage might be the issue

Can I see pictures? Does he have toys to destroy? Cockatiels are prone to agressivity if he’s u well mentally he will be agressive birds need to fly, destroy and forage

What kind of pellets? What veggies does he eats what supplements is he on? Cockatiels are part of the parakeet family these birds have a hard time digesting pellets. Does he have a diarrhea?

Do you have a picture of the cage? Cockatiels are very hormonal birds if he has a mirror it will make him agressive. You can offer food in your hand but in a way that bird has to climb on your fingers to get it. What food is he on? What’s the treats you are using? I need more info

That’s perfect but there’s no iode in it so I recommend adding one. That one is normal is he never goes on it. The cuttle bone can be mixed in the food but not the mineral bloc he can overdose. A healthy bird barely uses their supplements. I personally love giving clay too. I love the brand hari and I give their clay cal. What brand is your pellets
