Questions about Canary Winged Parakeets
Post Body

Hey parrot peeps!

I’m curious about canary winged parakeets. There is one in my local pet store that is just a complete darling and always motions to me she wants me to pick her up. Obviously, this makes me melt and want to bring that baby home, but I know nothing about birds other than what I’ve learned lurking here.

To be clear, I don’t plan on bringing her home unless my stars align and my husband agrees AND I do all my prep and research beforehand. I have a pet chameleon and I researched his care for 8 months before taking the dive. I do not approve of impulse pet ownership!

My questions are: - on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most, how cuddly/snuggly/SWEET are these kinds of birds? I find the idea of a bird snuggling me to be extremely sweet and desirable. But I also need to be able to put them down and get things done as needed.

  • how possessive are they? I know there are birds out there that absolutely SCREAM when they don’t have their human around. I value peace and quiet and my so does my husband. We work from home.

  • what are their space and exercise requirements?

  • can they be potty trained to poop in one area consistently?

  • can they be harness trained? What about recall trained?

  • I googled it but for some reason could not find their lifespan info. How long can they live for?

  • anyone that has experience with canary winged parakeets, I’d love to hear your general experiences and a little bit about their personality! I’d also be interested in how you came to buy/rescue/adopt your baby. Any advice welcome.

Thanks in advance!
