My 17 soon to be 18 year old daughter has no motivation or drive to do anything. I’ve tried and tried to instill responsibility and self direction but nothing seems to sink in. I’m stressing about what life is gonna be like after she graduates, I try to talk to her about her future but she just shuts down and goes to her room. Have any of you found yourselves in a similar situation? It’s hard to talk to kids nowadays
I would maybe have a therapist get involved just to rule out something like adhd or depression which could cause similar issues.
Also you could try asking them some questions that indirectly help with intrinsic motivation. So for example, when they wake up you could ask what's one thing you want to get done today? Even if they just say take a nap or listen to music, they have set a goal for themselves and if you keep asking daily, it becomes habit.
You could ask them for advice, "I feel tired from work today, but dinner still needs to get figured out. What do you think I should do?" They might suggest cereal or take out, but now they are practicing for a real world situation they will be experiencing soon enough.
Not perfect, but might help get the ball rolling

Yes it's always so hard. And there's always the chance of waiting weeks to get set up with a therapist and then they don't click ðŸ«
