I want to start by saying that I am not complaining. It's Epic's game and they can do what they want. I am not some SJW here to take your games away. It's just discussion and sharing my opinion. If you disagree with me please tell me why and let's not make it about some larger political issue. Thanks
So I'm not the biggest fan of Sparrow's current face. It kind of irks me, especially when you consider how much it is now different from all of her artwork.
When Paragon first launched, Sparrow was my favourite hero. And that was mainly because of her art design. She's a stereotypical ranger character but I thought Epic made some genuinely interesting and subtle choices with her design. She was a masterclass of how you can imply a lot with very little.
Sparrow had (from my perspective) 3 unique elements to her face:
- It was short and rounded in the cheeks
- She was freckled
- Her complexion was off-white
Sparrow was traditionally beautiful but not the standard iteration of it. She had an implied cultural heritage that was impossible to place. Combined with the feather in her hair and she felt almost Native-American. And that implication tied in so well with her abilities.
Combined with her traditional beauty design and it seemed like she had a mixed heritage and that gave her character depth. An implied history that went back beyond her own generation. Like I said, these 3 little touches added a lot to think about when trying to consider who she was.
But now all of that stuff is gone. She is now completely traditionally beautiful. Her face is long, thin and pointed. Her freckles are gone (Although that could easily be just a reality of trying to render something so subtle) and while her complexion has never really matched her artwork. The fact that her other features have gone really highlights the fact that that dual heritage feel doesn't exist anymore.
And I'm curious to know why? The simplest explanation is that one of the artists just made a higher quality facial model and the studio thought it would be good to change it to bring up the quality of the game. But I think that small choice might have done more damage than they realise.
Does anyone else agree with me? Coz I really feel the Sparrow from the art is a much better character than the Sparrow in the game. Am I thinking too much about this? Do people prefer it the way it is now?
