In almost all PDX games there are unit map icons that pop up when the camera is at a certain distance from the ground. They look like this: https://i.imgur.com/NOwdcG0.png
I've been trying to find a way to make it so that these icons will only appear when one is much more zoomed in. They tend to get very cluttered at high zoom levels because they stay the same size even when one zooms out.
I found the unit map icons are controlled in interface\mapicons.gui but they only seem to be defined there, not the height that they appear at. Furthermore, changing basically anything in this file, or removing it completely causes a game crash when units appear.
The defines.lua are also not helpful, the only thing that could be of use is a "PROVINCE_NAME_DRAW_DISTANCE" value that never has any affect in game, whether you change it or not.
Does anyone know how to change at what height unit icons are generated?
